  • Solar Rooftop - The Investment Worthwhile

Renewable energy transition is a very effective way to reduce carbon footprint and electricity costs. A solar rooftop is an easy and cost-effective way to meet daily energy requirements. A regular solar rooftop plant of 1 kWp capacity requires does not requires more than 10 square metres of area. With a lifespan of 25 years, a 1 kWp system can generate nearly 120 units of electricity every month, which would be around 1,300–1,500 units a year, depending on the location.

The transition to solar energy comes with multiple advantages. Let us have a look, before you plan to make an investment.
    • Reduced energy costs: Solar rooftop installation effectively means that most households' electricity consumption would be free of cost, once the installation is done and it is connected to the grid via net metering. In the net metering mechanism, the power generated by the solar panels is used for household consumption and the excess power is fed back to the grid. If the amount of power generated is not sufficient, the electricity is drawn from the grid.
    • If you solar panels generate more power than what is being consumed, the electricity meter records the units fed into the grid. The meter also records if the energy consumption exceeds generation. At the end of every month, you pay only for the total energy consumed.
    • In case, more power is generated than consumed, then extra units of electricity are credited to the next month's bill for settlement. At the end of the year, the utility company pays you for the excess power generation. With this system, it is ensured that you are charged only for the net power consumed. In addition to this, you get to save in the higher tariff slab. Considering that electricity tariff increases 5–6 % every year, your savings will effectively increase over time.
    • Reduced carbon footprint and appreciation in value: A solar rooftop installation is an investment that appreciates with time and allows constant increase in savings. It is an easy and cost-effective way to save the environment. Every unit of thermal power 0.7 kg of carbon dioxide is generated. However, solar energy prevents 0.7 kg of carbon dioxide emission with every unit. Therefore, installing a 1 kWp solar rooftop is equivalent to planting two trees in terms of carbon sequestration.
    • Payback period: Depending on the tariff, the payback period for your solar rooftop installation will vary from 5 – 7 years. For instance, a solar rooftop generates the highest amount of electricity during summers, and mitigates the steep bill, thus leading to huge savings.
    • Zero operation and maintenance cost: Homeowners don't incur any maintenance and operational charges on a solar rooftop installation, as it does not have any moving parts. The only maintenance required is cleaning the panels in order to ensure maximum absorption of sunlight. It is an easy process that can be done weekly or every 15 days, depending on the dust conditions in the area.

So, if you are planning to invest in solar panels for home, make sure you consider all these benefits.
